Emma Post Super Ankle (2013)

Emma’s Cute Boots!

2013 was essentially an orthopedic free year that allowed us to enjoy watching Emma grow.  We had our checkup appointment with Dr. Standard in October while in town for the Save-A-Limb ride.  After new X-rays and a consultation with the RIAO team we decided to schedule her next big surgery for Feb 2014.  She was now at the point where lengthening made since because her leg length discrepancy had increased to 4-5cm.  We had the choice to proceed as early as that next year or wait until she was age four; possibly five.  Tim and I decided it was best to proceed in 2014 based on the discrepancy and the fact that Emma would be less likely to remember a lot at the age of 3 versus 4 or 5.

As would be expected, we were a little nervous and scared of what lie ahead for Emma with the major surgery and extended amount of time in the external fixator.  We had a little taste with her last surgery but she only had her frame on for three months and the turning schedule was a lot less not to mention the much more intense physical therapy she would require with this surgery.

With all of this weighing on our mind, we still knew that it was the right decision for her and we felt comfortable with Dr. Standard and the RIAO team.

This is why we are making it an important mission in our lives to share Emma’s story and to give hope. There is another option. A great option, to the standard treatment of amputation.
