Ortho Check-up & SAL Ride (October 2012)

Emma And DaddyMy family and I went up for our first Save-A-Limb Walk/Ride in October 2012 and also had another orthopedic appointment while we were there.

Our orthopedic appointment went well. We learned that Emma’s discrepancy which was projected to be 7-12cm was actually now less. Maybe just 6-10cm. This is because sometimes after limb lengthening, the inhibition of growth that is present on her affected leg decreases. This means that her growth on her affected leg is somewhat faster than it had been before. According to Dr. Standard this is a trend that they have noticed.

The Save-A-Limb Ride (for us) was great too. The Save-A-Limb Ride is a charity event (see Save-A-Limb section for full details) hosted by The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics to raise money for families who cannot afford the surgeries needed for limb preservation.

Team Emma (now called Emma’s Entourage) raised over $12,000 towards the total of over $200,000 which went toward saving limbs of children both here and abroad who may not otherwise be able to afford limb preservation surgeries.

We were so excited to participate in this 1-mile walk and what made it extra-special was that Emma had just started walking!

She did her first Baby-Marathon at 18 months old. One mile in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 15 seconds… it can only get better from here!
